The host city of the Olympiad, Izhevsk is the capital of the Udmurt Republic, which is a region of Russia. The modern industrial complex of Izhevsk includes over 50 large-scale industrial enterprises of machine-building, metallurgy, electronics, chemistry. The legendary designer of small machine guns, academician Mikhail Kalashnikov has been working in one of Izhevsk plants for many years.
Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University was founded in 1952. At present the Kalashnikov ISTU has 7 training and educational buildings in Izhevsk and branches in 5 towns. Over 1,000 teachers are involved in educational process; over 500 of them have PhD and DSc degrees. More than 21,000 students study at 12 faculties of the university. Scientific schools have been formed in the following areas: strength; reliability; mechanical transmissions; design of special mechanisms; complex automation; CAD systems; computer sciences; chemical technology; testing of complex machinery. The university scientific schools direct their efforts to solve the basic problems of mechanical engineering, instrument-making, computer science and ecology.
The Kalashnikov ISTU has high experience in carrying out students Olympiads in theoretical mechanics and theory of mechanisms and machines. The first five National Student Olympiads on Theoretical Mechanics (1981–1985) were hosted by the Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University. The Kalashnikov ISTU student’s teams had won the competitions many times. In 2007–2010 the Kalashnikov ISTU held three All-Russian Student Olympiads in mechanism and machine science.
In the cooperation with IFToMM, the Kalashnikov ISTU successfully organized the First International Olympiad in Machine and Mechanism Science – SIOMMS 2011.
